‘Miracle house’ stands untouched amid Nepal’s catastrophic floods

A turquoise-green house left standing amid the destruction caused by Nepal’s catastrophic floods has become known on social media as the “miracle house.”

Located in Nuwakot district near the Trishuli, the house endured a violent surge of water, mud, rocks and debris that destroyed structures around it. Dramatic footage shows the flood entering the lower parts of the building, tearing away doors and windows and filling the interior with mud, while family members sought refuge on the upper floors.

Members of the family of Prakash Pandeya Pyakurel were inside when the flooding reached the settlement. With too little time to escape to safer ground, they moved upstairs and remained trapped as water carrying ice and debris struck the building from all sides. Pyakurel’s wife later said they believed they might not survive.

The family was eventually rescued alive. Images taken after the disaster show the roughly 40-year-old house standing almost alone in a devastated landscape, surrounded by mud and wreckage. Its owner believes strong foundations and quality construction helped it withstand the torrent, although no single explanation can be confirmed without a detailed engineering assessment.

The floods began after part of a glacier collapsed near the Chinese-Nepalese border, sending a massive flow of water, ice, mud, rocks and trees through valleys and river channels. Settlements, roads, bridges and other infrastructure were destroyed. More than 1,200 people had reportedly died in Nepal and Tibet by Wednesday, while thousands remained missing. Rescue teams continued searching, including in tunnels linked to hydropower projects where survivors might still be found.
