Miroslav Aleksić’s People’s Movement of Serbia Rejects Joint Election List With SSP

Miroslav Aleksić’s People’s Movement of Serbia will not join the Freedom and Justice Party, or SSP, on a joint list in the expected snap parliamentary elections, N1 has learned.

The decision comes after media close to the authorities reported this week that the elections could take place on October 25. The People’s Movement concluded that it was too late to negotiate an agreement, while opposition within the party’s membership also weighed against joining a common slate.

Weekly magazine Vreme reported that Aleksić had spoken with SSP leader Dragan Đilas about running together. The two men have already met once, Vreme said, citing a senior opposition source. “In all the parties, there is broad support for running on one list. But evidently, the bottleneck is with Đilas and Aleksić. They have about a week at most to reach an agreement,” the source said.

Đilas said on N1’s Novi dan program that discussions were still continuing over the best way to contest the election. He said the parties were considering which arrangement could produce more than 50% collectively with the student list. The People’s Movement’s decision now rules out at least one proposed form of cooperation.
