Misdiagnosed for a year, Croatian woman discovers life-threatening tumor; now learning to speak again

For over a year, Andrea, now 63, endured persistent hoarseness, a symptom doctors initially attributed to allergies. As her condition worsened, making even short walks a struggle and leading to significant weight loss, further medical investigations were initiated. The turning point came when an anesthesiologist suspected an issue with her airways and referred her to an ear, nose, and throat specialist.

Within 24 hours, specialists discovered a roughly five-centimeter tumor obstructing her airway and larynx, narrowing her passage for air almost completely. Doctors were astonished she was still alive. A biopsy confirmed the tumor was malignant, indicating stage four cancer. While the diagnosis was shocking, it also brought a sense of relief, finally providing an answer to her debilitating symptoms.

Andrea underwent a laryngectomy, losing her natural voice. Fitted with a special voice prosthesis, she initially struggled to speak due to radiation damage. Her first word, "hi," spoken during speech therapy, brought both her and her therapist to tears. However, her voice remained very quiet, making phone calls and automated systems difficult.

Complications in late 2024 led to the removal of the prosthesis, leaving Andrea voiceless again. She adapted by using text-to-speech apps, writing, lip-reading, an electrolarynx, and learning sign language. The inability to communicate quickly was a significant frustration. Despite her health battles, Andrea continued her active lifestyle, practicing yoga, hiking, playing golf, and driving across the United States three times.

In early 2026, Andrea began using new voice technology, enabling her to communicate differently. She now shares her journey on social media to educate the public about throat cancer and combat the stigma, particularly the misconception that smoking is the sole cause. Her videos have garnered millions of views, receiving widespread support instead of the ridicule she feared. Andrea, who still uses a feeding tube, aims to show she is an ordinary person, with a desire to get lost in the streets of Paris and embrace new challenges without fear.
