Misty Dacian Fortress Reopens to Tourists After Decades of Inaccessibility

The ancient Dacian fortress of Bănița, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Romania, has finally reopened to tourists after decades of isolation. For years, accessing this historical monument was fraught with danger, deterring most visitors and leaving it largely unknown despite its proximity to the Jiu Valley towns of Petroșani and Petrila.

Until now, the journey to the fortress was considered one of Romania's riskiest tourist trails. Parts of the route involved navigating a narrow, nearly 500-meter gorge alongside a railway line, where the risk of encountering a train was a serious concern. Beyond this, hikers had to find unmarked paths with steep inclines, a challenge that led to several instances of tourists becoming stranded on cliffs and requiring rescue by mountain services.

The route is 0.57 km long, with an estimated one-way travel time of about 40 minutes, an elevation difference of 104 m, and a medium difficulty level.

This difficult access kept the fortress out of the mainstream tourist circuit, but it did not deter treasure hunters, who repeatedly scoured the archaeological site. However, a new era begins on August 1, 2026, with the opening of a new, marked thematic trail through Bănița Gorges. This route, approximately 0.57 kilometers long with an estimated 40-minute ascent and a 104-meter elevation gain, is rated as medium difficulty.

Visitors are advised to wear appropriate gear, follow trail markers, and respect the natural and cultural heritage. The Bănița fortress area also offers access to other natural and historical sites, including the impressive Bolii Cave, known for its tunnel-like structure and acoustics, and the spectacular Bănița Gorges.
