Mitsubishi Pajero family to expand with new compact SUV

Mitsubishi is set to revive its iconic Pajero off-road vehicle, planning a three-model lineup that includes a new compact SUV. This expansion aims to recapture the spirit of the original Pajero while adapting to modern market demands.

The new addition, tentatively named Pajero io, will be a five-door compact SUV. This model is designed to offer practical space and genuine off-road capability, positioning it as a direct competitor to vehicles like the upcoming five-door Suzuki Jimny. Japanese media reports suggest the Pajero io will adopt a more rugged exterior design, emphasizing its adventurous character.

Under the hood, the Pajero io is anticipated to feature a 1.6-liter hybrid powertrain, similar to the one found in the Xforce. This system is expected to deliver a balance of performance and fuel efficiency, with an estimated fuel consumption of 24.4 kilometers per liter. The vehicle's design is also expected to draw inspiration from the Delica Mini, particularly in its lighting and front grille, while incorporating elements that enhance its off-road aesthetic, such as protective cladding and skid plates.
