MLB Commissioner Manfred confident 2027 season will be saved amid labor talks

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed confidence that a new collective bargaining agreement will be reached before the current one expires on December 1, ensuring the 2027 season proceeds without disruption. Manfred stated that negotiations between the league and the players' union are active, with regular meetings occurring.

"We are meeting regularly, which is good," Manfred said during the Little League Classic broadcast. "Every week we've had days where we've met with the players. It's early, but we have a lot of work ahead of us and we are working on it." He emphasized MLB's commitment to avoiding any interruption to the schedule, stating, "Our goal is to reach an agreement. We want to reach an agreement. We want to play baseball next year. We are planning to play baseball next year."

However, significant disagreements persist. Owners are pushing for some form of salary cap, while the players' union (MLBPA) seeks improvements in minimum salaries, luxury tax thresholds, and bonus pools for pre-arbitration players. Other unresolved issues include the potential for an international draft, television revenue distribution, and player service time rules.

The league is mindful of recent labor disputes. A 99-day lockout in the 2021-22 offseason led to a delayed Opening Day. More significantly, a 232-day players' strike in 1994 resulted in the cancellation of the World Series, a historic event not seen in 90 years. Manfred and the owners aim to prevent a repeat of such damaging conflicts as the December 1 deadline approaches.
