Modi hits back at Opposition over 7.8% GDP growth: ‘Some people couldn’t digest the numbers’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi used a speech at Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi to answer critics of India’s 7.8% GDP growth, saying the figure demonstrated the economy’s strength despite global uncertainty.

“Some people could not digest the numbers,” Modi said in Hindi, taking an indirect swipe at the Opposition. He pointed to the ongoing war in West Asia and several trade-related challenges as circumstances in which India had still achieved the reported growth.

Modi said the result showed India’s “strength and potential.” He also referred to those who had become known for placing India among the “Fragile Five,” saying they were now finding the latest figures difficult to accept.

And this 7.8 per cent growth has come at a time when the war in West Asia is ongoing and there have been several trade-related challenges.

The prime minister was addressing the centenary celebrations of Shri Ram College of Commerce. He praised the college’s academic legacy, saying it had shaped generations of students and connected them to a brighter future.

He also described SRCC alumni as the institution’s “OGs,” saying they had carried the college’s name around the world and made their mark in fields beyond economics.
