Mojosongo chief gives update on fire at Solo’s Putri Cempo landfill

A major fire broke out Wednesday evening at Putri Cempo landfill in Mojosongo, Solo, Central Java, sending flames through large piles of rubbish.

Dozens of fire engines from Solo and neighboring Karanganyar were deployed, while hundreds of personnel climbed the waste mound to fight the blaze. The fire burned in Blocks C and D, which lie far enough from the nearest settlements in RW 30 and RW 39 that residents were not immediately threatened.

Mojosongo village chief Katarina Kartika said reports of the fire began arriving at about 6 p.m. She said local officials continued coordinating with Solo’s municipal government in case conditions worsened.

The regional disaster management agency coordinated with Mojosongo to establish a public kitchen. Medical teams from Solo’s Health Office and volunteers also stood by at the site.

Katarina said fires at Putri Cempo commonly occur during the dry season because of extreme weather. She said previous incidents had generally produced smoke rather than a blaze of this size. The cause of the current fire remained unknown.

This happens every year. But in the past, there was never a fire this large, only smoke that was quickly extinguished.
