Monaco appoint Filipe Luis as head coach on contract until 2028

AS Monaco has named Filipe Luis as its new head coach, signing the former defender to a contract that runs until June 2028. The appointment follows the dismissal of Sebastien Pocognoli, who was let go after Monaco secured a seventh-place finish in the league, failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Luis arrives in Monaco after a notable period with Brazilian club Flamengo. Taking charge in 2024, he led the team to five titles in just over a year, including the Brazilian Cup in 2024 and a Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Championship double in the subsequent season. However, his tenure ended abruptly in March.

Despite a strong run of results, including an 8-0 victory that secured a place in the Rio de Janeiro state championship final, Luis was dismissed following Flamengo's worst start to a season in a decade. This included losses in the Brazilian Super Cup and the South American Recopa.

As a player, Luis had a distinguished career, primarily as a left-back. He made 333 appearances for Atletico Madrid, contributing to their La Liga title in 2014, Copa del Rey in 2013, and Europa League wins in 2012 and 2018. He also had a spell at Chelsea, winning the Premier League in 2015.
