Moniepoint intensifies efforts to address tech talent shortage

Moniepoint Inc., a leading digital financial services provider in Africa, is stepping up its efforts to combat the continent's escalating shortage of software engineering talent. The company warns that this skills gap could lead to significant economic losses if left unaddressed, potentially slowing digital transformation across emerging markets.

The fintech unicorn highlighted its commitment following the graduation of the second cohort from its DreamDevs Bootcamp in Lagos. This flagship program is designed to cultivate a pipeline of local engineering talent essential for sustaining Africa's expanding digital economy. The initiative comes amid a widening global shortage of software developers, projected to reach 85 million by 2030, with estimated economic losses of $5.5 trillion.

Felix Ike, Moniepoint's Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that the DreamDevs program is a strategic, long-term investment in strengthening Nigeria's digital workforce, rather than a short-term recruitment drive. He stated, "Engineering excellence is not a naturally occurring phenomenon. It is a curated and intentionally built process that requires the right systems, the right resources, and sufficient time to take hold."

The nine-week bootcamp, developed in partnership with Semicolon, covered a comprehensive curriculum including Java Object-Oriented Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Software Testing, and Cloud Infrastructure. Participants collaborated in teams to develop real-world solutions across various sectors, presenting their projects during the Demo Day showcase. Graduates from the first cohort are already contributing to Moniepoint's engineering teams, demonstrating the program's immediate impact.
