Monsoon session of Parliament to be held from July 20 to August 13

India's Parliament is set to convene for its Monsoon Session from July 20 to August 13, 2026. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the dates on Saturday, following approval from President Droupadi Murmu for summoning both Houses.

The session aims to facilitate meaningful debate and discussion on issues of national importance. Meanwhile, a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is nearing a decision on a contentious 130th Constitution Amendment Bill. The committee is expected to adopt its report on July 17.

The bill's most debated provision, which mandates the automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Union or State ministers from office if they are arrested and remain in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days for serious offenses, is likely to be retained. Despite concerns raised by various stakeholders about potential misuse for political vendetta, the report is anticipated to include safeguards.

This proposed amendment has ignited a sharp political debate. Supporters argue it will enhance accountability in public office, while the opposition fears it could be exploited to destabilize elected governments through politically motivated investigations. The JPC's final report will be submitted to Parliament for further consideration. The opposition also plans to raise issues concerning alleged misinformation by the Defence Minister regarding casualties during Operation Sindoor.

On the recommendation of the Govt of India, Hon'ble President, Smt. Droupadi Murmu ji has approved the summoning of both the Houses of Parliament for the Monsoon Session 2026. The Session will commence on July 20, 2026 and continue till August 13, 2026, for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of National Importance.
