Montenegro's Northern Gem Sees Tourism Triple This Summer

Montenegro's northern regions are emerging as a surprise tourism hotspot, with the mountain town of Žabljak reporting a threefold increase in visitors this summer compared to the previous year. This dramatic growth highlights a shift in tourist interest beyond traditional coastal destinations like Budva and Herceg Novi.

Milena Vujović, a representative of the National Tourism Organization of Montenegro, noted that while popular spots remain busy, municipalities in the north are seeing remarkable gains. Kolašin, for example, has experienced a 20% rise in tourism, while Žabljak's visitor numbers have tripled. This surge is largely credited to the allure of Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site celebrated for its dramatic peaks, numerous glacial lakes, and the breathtaking Tara River canyon, often called the "Tear of Europe."

Particularly, we are pleased that some municipalities in the north are recording growth compared to the previous year. For example, Kolašin records growth of about 20 percent, and Žabljak records as many as three times more guests compared to the comparative period of the previous year.

Durmitor's pristine natural environment, rich flora, and fauna have long attracted nature lovers. Declared a national park in 1952 and recognized by UNESCO for its cultural and natural heritage, the area offers a unique blend of rugged mountains and serene glacial lakes, referred to by geographer Jovan Cvijić as "mountain eyes."

International tourists are increasingly discovering Montenegro's appeal. One visitor from Italy described the country as a "wonderful discovery," highlighting the contrast between the mountains and the sea, the historical charm of Kotor's Old Town, and the scenic beauty of Budva and Sveti Stefan. The affordability compared to other European destinations was also a significant draw, making Montenegro an attractive and diverse travel option.

Montenegro is a wonderful discovery, it is a country that few people from Italy visit, and yet it boasts the magnificent Durmitor National Park. We visited Kotor, and now we have arrived in Budva. I think it is beautiful. Besides this slightly newer part, there is also the Old Town, the historical core, which is the part I liked the most. And the promenade by the sea is wonderful, and now I think we will head towards Sveti Stefan to enjoy the view. Montenegro is truly a beautiful country and, for now, quite affordable compared to prices in the rest of Europe. It's a fantastic discovery because it has everything, both mountains and sea, and Boka Kotorska is incredible, it's a unique place. It's a wonderful feeling to have the mountains behind you and the sea right in front.
