Montijo Authorities Convene Emergency Meeting Over Rising Hantavirus Cases

Authorities in Montijo, Veraguas province, have called an extraordinary municipal council meeting to confront a rise in hantavirus cases. The urgent gathering signals local officials' concern over potential contagion and their commitment to bolstering prevention efforts in at-risk communities. While epidemiology teams are already active in the affected areas, the local government seeks to broaden the reach of its information and preventative campaigns.

José Luis Hernández, president of the Montijo Municipal Council, emphasized the need for a unified response. "Given the situation that has arisen, we will be meeting with the mayor to tackle the situation occurring in the district. An outbreak has occurred, and we must take it into consideration because we still have time," he stated. This highlights the proactive stance taken by local leadership to manage the health crisis.

Fidel Batista, Director of Food Control in Veraguas, noted that hantavirus symptoms can mimic common ailments, underscoring the importance of prompt medical evaluation. His office is also working to train producers on preventative safety measures. Health authorities urge individuals experiencing respiratory difficulties or suspicious symptoms to visit the Montijo health center for testing and diagnosis. Official reports confirm three hantavirus cases in Veraguas province: one in Soná and two in Montijo's Llano Largo sector, prompting the Ministry of Health to deploy epidemiological teams.
