Montpellier: Teenager charged with murder over fatal stabbing of minor

A 17-year-old in Montpellier, France, faces murder charges and is in provisional detention following the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old. The suspect voluntarily turned himself in to police on Monday, identifying himself as the perpetrator of the stabbing, and was immediately taken into custody.

The Montpellier public prosecutor's office confirmed that the teenager was charged with murder and placed in pre-trial detention after a judicial investigation was opened. According to initial findings, the accused and the victim knew each other well. The fatal encounter followed a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation.

The prosecutor's statement indicated that the suspect claimed to have picked up a knife and stabbed the victim without realizing the consequences of his actions. The 16-year-old victim sustained two stab wounds to the chest and died overnight at the Montpellier University Hospital. Two other individuals involved in the brawl were released after questioning.
