Morawiecki's new political path: Poland's former PM charts future after PiS split

Mateusz Morawiecki, Poland's former prime minister, has broken away from the dominant Law and Justice (PiS) party, establishing a new parliamentary faction. This significant political maneuver has fractured PiS, with 41 lawmakers joining Morawiecki's "Development Plus" group. The move follows a demand from PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski for the faction's dissolution, which Morawiecki refused, leading to threats of expulsion.

To gauge his future prospects, Morawiecki hosted a ten-hour picnic event in Warsaw's trendy Praga district, despite the sweltering 34-degree Celsius heat.

Notably, he extended an inclusive message, welcoming those who do not believe in God, a departure from the rhetoric often heard during PiS's 2015-2023 government years. His youthful appearance, in sneakers, and the enthusiastic reception from the crowd suggested a desire to forge a distinct political identity.
