Authorities are investigating two women from the Nalluruwa-Modarawila area in connection with a state bank assistant manager arrested over 35 million rupees missing from a Horana branch. The Panadura Divisional Criminal Investigations Unit is leading the probe.

Investigators revealed the suspect assistant manager had previously worked at a state bank in Nalluruwa. There, she allegedly borrowed 25 million rupees from a woman who provides loans with interest. She reportedly repaid 72 million rupees, including interest, and subsequently took out further loans in installments of 10 million rupees each.

Further inquiries uncovered that the moneylender had sent the suspect a text message the day before the bank funds went missing, demanding the return of 37 million rupees obtained through interest-based loans. The investigation also indicates the suspect borrowed 25 million rupees each from another woman in Nalluruwa and a woman who had returned from Italy. Additionally, she borrowed 37 million rupees from another individual.

Police stated that various parties had continuously pressured the suspect to repay these loans. The investigation also revealed that the assistant manager was scheduled for a transfer to a different bank branch the day after the money disappeared from the bank.

Under the guidance of Chief Inspector Rohan Vishwanath, the officer-in-charge of the Panadura Divisional Criminal Investigations Unit, officers are conducting further questioning of the two women.
