More new businesses enter Vietnam market, but over 15,400 firms in one sector shut down in eight months

Vietnam’s business market is seeing new entrants while a large number of companies leave. Nearly 206,400 businesses were newly established or resumed operations in the first eight months of the year, down 1.4% from the same period in 2025.

The figures from the Statistics Agency under the Ministry of Finance show that nearly 138,100 new businesses were registered, an increase of 7.7%. Almost 68,300 businesses returned to operation, however, marking a 15.8% decline. In August alone, nearly 12,200 new companies were established, down 40.5% year on year, while about 9,500 resumed operations.

At the same time, more than 88,000 businesses temporarily suspended operations, nearly 28,600 stopped operating while awaiting dissolution procedures, and over 40,800 completed the dissolution process. That amounted to roughly 19,700 businesses leaving the market each month. Completed dissolutions rose 125.5% from a year earlier, even as temporary suspensions and pending dissolutions declined.

Wholesale and retail, along with automobile and motorcycle repair, recorded the largest number of dissolved businesses. More than 15,400 firms in the group left the market, an increase of 133.5%. Manufacturing and processing recorded over 4,400 dissolutions, construction more than 3,100, real estate over 2,300, transport and storage more than 1,600, and accommodation and food services about 2,000.

New business registrations still increased in several sectors. Construction rose 40%, electricity, water and gas production and distribution grew by more than 60%, transport and storage increased 29.4%, and accommodation and food services climbed 32%.
