More Rain and Thunderstorms Forecast for Delhi as IMD Issues Third-Day Yellow Alert

Delhi faced another day of rain and thunderstorms on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for the capital for the third consecutive day.

The IMD forecast light to moderate rain, with thunderstorms and lightning in some areas. Temperatures were expected to reach 33°C at their highest and fall to 24.6°C overnight. Weather forecaster Navdeep Dahiya said thunderstorm formations were developing over Delhi NCR, while rain bands from western Uttar Pradesh were moving toward the region.

“Between 9am-3pm one to two spells of moderate to heavy showers will occur in most parts of Delhi, Noida Ghaziabad, and Faridabad,” Dahiya wrote on X.

Delhi has recorded moderate to heavy rain since September 4. The capital passed its annual average rainfall on Friday, when its total reached 780 millimeters, above the IMD’s long-period average of 774.4 millimeters. Delhi had recorded 10% excess rainfall since the start of the monsoon season.

The pattern differs sharply across neighboring states. Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab were facing rainfall deficits of 21%, 26% and 37%, respectively. Safdarjung, Delhi’s representative weather station, recorded 29.8 millimeters in the 24 hours to Sunday morning, while Chhatarpur recorded the highest total among listed stations at 50 millimeters. Delhi’s average air quality index stood at 59, in the satisfactory category. The weather department forecast mainly dry conditions from Monday through Saturday.
