More Than 60 Families in Apure Go a Week Without Electricity After Transformer Failure

More than 60 families in Puerto Páez, in Venezuela’s Apure state, spent a full week without electricity after a transformer failed in the area.

Residents said the outage worsened living conditions in La Parada and the Indigenous settlement of La Bendición de Dios. It disrupted the refrigeration of medical supplies and food intended for children, infants and older people.

The power cut also stopped electronic payment systems, spoiled goods in local businesses and halted the pumping of drinking water. The interruption has affected commercial activity in the border area as well as essential supplies.

Omar Ruiz, a councilor in Pedro Camejo municipality, urged the Apure government and the state electricity company to launch an immediate technical plan. He said regular institutional channels and technical reporting lines had been exhausted without a response or the deployment of repair crews.

Technicians cited deteriorating distribution lines, a lack of maintenance and failures in substation protection systems as possible reasons for the prolonged outages. With no report from the state electricity company, authorities requested technicians to inspect the transformers, replace damaged parts and support affected families.
