Morelos to replace patriotic fireworks with a lighting show

Morelos will mark Mexico’s Independence Day without its traditional fireworks this year. After the September 15 “Grito de Independencia,” the state will instead present a lighting show accompanied by music.

Governor Margarita González Saravia announced the change, saying it was intended to prevent accidents. She said the event would introduce a different tradition without eliminating lights and music. It will be the first time the state has used this kind of show, and she said she expected families to enjoy it.

Singer Majo Aguilar will headline the September 15 celebration. State officials also asked mayors to regulate alcohol sales from midnight on September 15 until noon on September 16, particularly in shops, supermarkets, businesses and grocery stores.

Security authorities said the “Fiestas Patrias Morelos” operation would involve the federal, state and municipal governments, including all 36 municipalities. The plan includes access controls, video surveillance and municipal police support on major roads. The state’s C5 monitoring center will use 2,648 surveillance cameras to detect and respond to risks during the celebrations.

Officials said the Army and National Guard would help reinforce security during the festivities and the September 16 parade. Schools will hold regular classes on September 15, so the state will not have a long holiday weekend for the national celebrations.
