Morena Defends López Obrador's Son Amid Campaigning Claims, Criticizes Governor's Travel

Ariadna Montiel Reyes, the national president of Morena, defended Andy López Beltrán, son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, against allegations of engaging in premature campaign activities. López Beltrán, who is seeking a seat in the Chamber of Deputies in his home state of Tabasco, is currently a National Councilor for Morena. Montiel Reyes stated that López Beltrán is fulfilling his party duties, which include organizing, combating disinformation, distributing the party's newspaper "Regeneración," and recruiting new members for the "Fourth Transformation" movement.

"We have said time and again that militants must attend to their tasks. So Andrés, on the contrary, is taking on the militant tasks that we all must take on in defense of sovereignty and transformation," Montiel Reyes explained during a press conference. She emphasized that López Beltrán is doing "what is expected of all our militants" in Tabasco.

In a separate matter, Montiel Reyes addressed the recent travel of Tabasco Governor Javier May, who was seen flying first class. She acknowledged that traveling first class is "not right" and stressed the importance of adhering to austerity measures, a policy upheld by President Claudia Sheinbaum. Montiel Reyes recalled that Sheinbaum herself attempted to travel on a commercial flight to the 2026 World Cup final in the United States, but the flight was canceled due to weather conditions. Despite acknowledging May's misstep, she expressed her appreciation for him as a "good, hardworking man" and a "companion of the territory," adding that "one mistake does not make him a bad governor" and that she is confident he will not repeat it.
