Morena senators dismiss impact of Inzunza's departure, opposition cries foul

Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázarez's decision to separate from the Morena parliamentary group and declare himself an independent legislator has triggered sharp reactions from both within his party and from the opposition. Morena's coordinator, Ignacio Mier Velazco, affirmed that Inzunza's choice is personal and, despite attempts to persuade him otherwise, the party will respect his decision to resign from the group.

Mier Velazco stated that Morena will not be distracted from its legislative agenda or its support for President Claudia Sheinbaum. He indicated that the impact of the senator's departure on Morena's qualified majority in the Senate would be analyzed based on the votes needed for future initiatives. Regarding Inzunza's potential departure from the party itself, Mier noted that this decision rests with Morena's internal party organs.

From the PVEM, Senator Jorge Carlos Ramírez Marín echoed that it was a personal decision, suggesting Morena's bloc would not suffer significant harm. However, he advised that the former Morena senator should have acted with more prudence and processed his decision with his parliamentary group. Ramírez Marín considered it regrettable that the situation reached this point, noting that the federal executive's call for prudence also applies to Inzunza, though he dismissed the separation as a major political blow to the party.

Conversely, Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) senators asserted that Inzunza's departure from Morena is a deliberate simulation. They accused him of seeking to maintain his constitutional immunity and evade potential legal actions. The opposition's stance frames the move not as a genuine personal choice but as a strategic maneuver within the political landscape.
