Moretti’s romantic return and Oasis rock take the spotlight at Venice

Nanni Moretti’s emotional return to the Venice Lido became one of the defining images of the festival’s day. The director struggled to contain his emotion as journalists gave a thunderous welcome to the press conference for Succederà questa notte, his first Venice appearance in 37 years.

The film, inspired by stories from Eshkol Nevo, is competing for the Golden Lion and features Louis Garrel, Jasmine Trinca, Hippolyte Girardot and Angela Finocchiaro. Journalists gave it a mixed reception, but the film has already recorded strong sales around the world. Moretti said he had moved away from his old idea of making “the same film, but always more beautiful” and, with Valia Santella and Federica Pontremoli, imagined a love story instead.

The festival also drew major attention to Noel and Liam Gallagher, who arrived for the world premiere, out of competition, of Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger. Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace directed the documentary about the brothers’ reunion and world tour, from a screenplay by Steven Knight. Fans waited from the morning outside the casino building and crowded the red carpet before the evening screening.

The Gallagher brothers skipped the press conference, where Knight and the directors appeared, but took part in the photocall. Knight said the story of two highly intelligent and funny brothers gave him the chance to tell an unusually emotional story with an exhilarating soundtrack.

Another competition film was Primetime, Lance Oppenheim’s first narrative feature. Robert Pattinson plays Chris Hansen, the journalist behind the controversial 2006 television format To Catch a Predator. The real Hansen has called the portrayal too dark and misleading, although he bought advertising linked to US screenings to promote the streaming network where he continues his investigations.
