Morocco and Spain halt new migrant surge into Ceuta with military cordon and changed tactics

Moroccan and Spanish authorities implemented a robust military cordon and a shift in Moroccan attitude to successfully halt a new wave of migrants attempting to enter the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. This operation prevented a crisis reminiscent of the one on July 30, when thousands of young men tried to cross illegally, leading to dozens of fatalities.

A social media call had urged migrants to cross the border into the Spanish territory in Africa. Moroccan security forces were deployed in significant numbers, utilizing a strong military presence and a change in their approach to managing the border. This coordinated effort aimed to deter the mass crossing.

Spain also bolstered its security measures in Ceuta, deploying over 1,500 police officers and Civil Guard members. The heightened security was a direct response to the recent social media mobilization and the memory of the deadly events of late July. The successful prevention of another large-scale crossing highlights the effectiveness of the reinforced measures and the cooperative stance between Morocco and Spain in managing migration flows.
