Morocco excels at the Informatics Olympiad in Uzbekistan

Morocco has demonstrated its growing strength in informatics and programming on the international stage, with its national team achieving notable success at the 2026 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Uzbekistan.

The Moroccan contingent, competing against 97 countries, secured significant accolades. Young talent Zakaria Abi Al-Sourour from Safi earned a silver medal, marking him as the top performer from both the Arab and African regions in this prestigious global competition. Additionally, Mohammed Al-Sharqi from Rabat received an Honorable Mention for his commendable performance.

The Moroccan delegation also included Yasser Salama from Casablanca and Mohammed Ada from Laayoune. The team was mentored by Dr. Anas Abu Kalam and Mohammed Amin Mutahid. These four students qualified for the IOI after successfully navigating national qualifiers that began last October, attracting over a thousand participants.

This achievement further bolsters Morocco's track record in continental and international informatics competitions. Previously, the Moroccan team secured first place in the African Olympiad in Programming, earning three gold and two silver medals. Earlier, Fatima Zahra Labidi won a bronze medal at the European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics.

The Moroccan Olympiad in Informatics organization emphasized that cultivating an "Olympic champion" requires years of dedication and intensive training. They stated that these consistent results are not isolated individual achievements but reflect the emergence of a new generation of Moroccan talent in programming, algorithms, informatics, and mathematics, forming a national base capable of competing at the highest international levels.
