Morocco: Minister Calls for Full Implementation of Official Amazigh Status

Mohamed Boussaid, head of the National Rally of Independents party, has called for the full implementation of the Amazigh language's official status across all sectors of Moroccan society. Speaking at a national conference in Azrou, Boussaid described the activation of Amazigh as a major national project that embodies the kingdom's dedication to justice and citizenship, in line with the vision of King Mohammed VI.

Boussaid stressed that Amazigh is more than just a cultural or linguistic component; it is a shared national asset and a fundamental element of Morocco's unified identity, which draws from diverse sources. He asserted that establishing its official status is a constitutional and strategic imperative that reinforces values of equity and strengthens national unity amidst diversity. This path, he noted, traces its roots to King Mohammed VI's pivotal 2001 speech in Agadir, which marked a turning point in recognizing Amazigh, and was further cemented by the 2011 constitution making it an official language alongside Arabic.

The minister highlighted the current government's commitment to moving beyond mere promises to tangible action, allocating financial and institutional resources to accelerate the officialization of Amazigh. This includes its gradual integration into public policies across education, administration, justice, and public services, making it an integral part of the social state project led by the King. The National Rally of Independents views Amazigh as an ongoing reform effort focused on efficacy and tangible impact, not just symbolic gestures. Success, Boussaid stated, is measured by the language's presence in daily life, the quality of public services, and equal opportunities for all Moroccans.
