Morocco represents King at AU health summit in Accra, emphasizes African health sovereignty

Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, represented King Mohammed VI at an extraordinary African Union summit in Accra, Ghana, focused on critical health challenges facing the continent.

The summit aimed to accelerate efforts to eradicate AIDS, eliminate preventable maternal deaths, combat endemic and non-communicable diseases, and bolster health systems by 2030. This gathering follows a decision from the 38th ordinary session of the Conference of African Heads of State and Government, addressing evolving health priorities in Africa.

During the summit, Bourita emphasized the "royal vision" for African health sovereignty, grounded in principles of solidarity, social justice, and shared expertise. He underscored Morocco's strategic focus on health as a cornerstone of its continental cooperation, aligning with the summit's key pillars: local manufacturing of medical products, innovative financing, and political governance.

The Moroccan delegation, which also included representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, engaged in discussions on a roadmap for the African Union beyond 2030. The goal is to ensure sustainable responses to HIV/AIDS, enhance the resilience of health systems, and improve health security across the continent.

The summit's agenda reflects a concerted effort by African nations to address pressing public health issues and build more robust, self-sufficient health infrastructures capable of meeting future challenges.
