Morocco, Spain, Portugal to Co-Host 2030 FIFA World Cup

Morocco, Spain, and Portugal have been selected to jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a decision FIFA described as a landmark celebration of the tournament's centenary. This historic choice designates Morocco as the first African nation to co-host the prestigious event.

The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the sole candidacy will be the combined bid of Morocco, Portugal and Spain, which will host the event in 2030. In addition, and as part of the centenary celebration of the FIFA World Cup, three matches will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

The 2030 tournament will commemorate 100 years since the inaugural World Cup in Uruguay in 1930. To honor this milestone, FIFA has approved a unique hosting arrangement. Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will each host one opening match before the competition moves to the three main host nations. FIFA President Gianni Infantino called this model a fitting tribute to the World Cup's history and its origins.

This development is seen as a significant breakthrough for African football, showcasing the continent's growing capability to host major international sporting events. Analysts anticipate accelerated investments in sports infrastructure, transportation, tourism, and hospitality, creating new economic avenues. Moses Magogo, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, celebrated the decision as a historic achievement for Africa, inspiring nations like Uganda to invest further in the sport.
