Morten Hjulmand transfers to Atletico Madrid

Danish international Morten Hjulmand is set to join Atletico Madrid, leaving Sporting CP for the Spanish club. The 27-year-old defensive midfielder has signed a contract with Atletico that runs until the summer of 2031.

Atletico Madrid praised Hjulmand's attributes, describing him as a player who stands out with his physical strength, ball-winning capabilities, and game intelligence, which enhances his foresight and distribution. The Spanish club also emphasized his leadership qualities, noting his role as captain at Sporting CP and his previous captaincy at Lecce, where he became the second-youngest captain in Serie A history at just 23 years old.

Hjulmand spent the last three seasons as a key player for Sporting, making 142 appearances and scoring five goals. Before that, he played 95 games for Lecce. He has also established himself as a regular for the Danish national team. At Atletico Madrid, he will play under the guidance of club legend Diego Simeone, known for his own demanding style as a defensive midfielder.
