Most Powerful Islamic Nations Form Defense Alliance

Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have formalized a significant mutual defense pact, pledging collective security in Mecca. This agreement establishes that an armed attack against any one of the three nations will be viewed as an assault on all of them, significantly enhancing their combined defensive posture.

The pact was unveiled following a meeting between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This alliance brings together three of the most influential Muslim-majority countries, aiming to "strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression."

While Western media has focused on Iran's recent actions, including targeting Saudi Arabia and disrupting oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after a joint U.S.-Israel strike, the strategic implications of this new alliance are profound. Notably, Pakistan is the sole Islamic nation possessing nuclear weapons. This fact may be a key factor influencing Tehran's reaction to the agreement.

An Iranian parliament member, Ebrahim Rezaei, commented that the Mecca agreement would not bring security to Saudi Arabia, suggesting that reliance on such pacts, or past reliance on the U.S., has not guaranteed safety. The agreement also aims to advance cooperation across all aspects of defense between the three states. Pakistan's existing strong relationship with China, from which it acquires advanced weaponry, combined with Saudi economic power and Turkey's industrial strength, creates a formidable bloc with significant diplomatic potential.
