Mother and son among three arrested for faking accidents to claim 200 million won in insurance

A group of three, including a 40-year-old man, his 60-year-old mother, and his 40-year-old girlfriend, have been transferred to prosecutors on charges of insurance fraud. The man, identified as 'A,' was arrested on August 11. They are accused of intentionally causing accidents or inflating damages to receive approximately 240 million won in insurance payouts.

The suspects allegedly targeted vehicles changing lanes or crossing into other lanes during left turns. They would accelerate to collide with vehicles making lane changes or deliberately hit cars that strayed from their lanes during left turns. Investigations revealed they caused multiple accidents in Seoul and the Gyeonggi Province between March 2023 and August 2025, totaling 29 incidents.

Even minor collisions, such as side mirrors brushing against each other, were allegedly used as pretexts for prolonged hospital stays to inflate claims. The investigation was initiated after the Financial Supervisory Service reported suspicious patterns of repeated accidents and extended treatment periods.

While the suspects denied the charges, evidence including video analysis from the National Forensic Service and the Road Traffic Authority, along with testimonies from 29 accident victims, supports the accusations. Bank records also indicate the distribution of insurance money among the group, which was reportedly used for living expenses.
