Mother Dolphin Carries Deceased Calf for Days, Supported by Pod in Western Australia

A poignant scene unfolded off the coast of Western Australia, where a mother dolphin was observed carrying her deceased calf for several days. The grieving dolphin, named Fragl, was accompanied by a pod of 14 other dolphins, who remained steadfastly by her side.

The observation was made by researchers from Geographe Marine Research, an Australian organization dedicated to monitoring dolphin populations along Western Australia's coast. Fragl had given birth to the calf two weeks prior, during the Australian winter, a season known for its challenging conditions for newborn marine mammals.

This was not the first loss for Fragl, who had previously lost four calves. The research team had hoped for a different outcome this time, especially after noticing signs of rapid breathing, or tachypnea, in the calf, which heightened their concerns.

Scientists interpret the mother dolphin's behavior as a form of mourning, a known phenomenon in cetaceans. This extended period of carrying the calf's body is believed to continue until the mother eventually releases it and resumes her search for food. The presence of the other 14 dolphins underscores the complex social structures and deep emotional bonds that exist within dolphin communities.

The event occurred near Banbury, an area with a small dolphin population and a naturally low calf survival rate. The entire event was captured by a drone operated by the Geographe Marine Research team, providing a rare and moving glimpse into the emotional lives of these intelligent creatures.
