Mother of baby found dead in La Mina building released under court restrictions

The mother of a newborn found dead inside a black garbage bag in a residential building in La Mina has been released under court restrictions, while investigators examine her possible connection to the death.

Mossos d’Esquadra arrested the 33-year-old woman after the baby was discovered on September 2 at about 1 p.m. A cleaner working in one of the blocks noticed bloodstains on the landing. They led to a garbage bag containing the infant’s body at 11 Llevant Street in Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Emergency medical services and several police patrols went to the building. Medical staff intervened but could not save the newborn. Early police checks found indications of a possible criminal death, prompting officers to examine the building, cordon off part of the area and gather evidence about how the baby had been abandoned.

Late Friday, the duty judge in Badalona ordered the woman’s release. The measures include taking away her passport, prohibiting her from leaving the territory and requiring her to report periodically to the court, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia said.

The Mossos criminal investigation division is trying to establish what happened before the baby was found and what role the woman may have played. She remains under investigation, and the legal classification of the events has not yet been determined. Investigators are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses while they await the autopsy results, which are expected to clarify the cause of death.
