Motorcyclist killed by falling tree in Uyo; questions raised over state's tree management

A motorcyclist was killed by a falling tree on Abak Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday morning. The incident, which occurred during heavy rainfall, has intensified worries about the state government's oversight of mature trees lining the capital's roads.

Witnesses reported that the commercial motorcyclist was on his way to work when the tree collapsed around 7 a.m., striking him. Videos reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES appear to show a lifeless body next to the fallen tree and a motorcycle. However, police offered a different account, stating their officers found the tree obstructing the road at 9:30 a.m. and received preliminary information about an injured motorcyclist, but neither the victim nor the motorcycle were present.

The Command is aware of the incident. On 13 August, at about 9:30 a.m., patrol operatives observed a fallen tree obstructing part of Abak Road by the Cultural Centre, Uyo. Preliminary information indicated that an unidentified motorcyclist rode into the fallen tree and sustained injuries. However, the victim and motorcycle were not found at the scene.

Locals at the scene, however, told PREMIUM TIMES that the motorcyclist had died and that police removed the body around 9 a.m. By the afternoon, workers were seen cutting the tree into smaller pieces for removal, engaged by the police. The fallen tree showed visible signs of decay, raising questions about its prior condition and maintenance.

Another nearby tree also displayed signs of age and decay. The incident happened despite the absence of strong winds, according to witnesses. This event highlights a broader issue, as many roads in Uyo feature mature trees with branches extending over traffic and pedestrian areas. Residents are calling for authorities to address the management of these roadside trees more seriously.
