Mount Maunganui landslide: Tauranga councillors grill senior staff over risk management

Tauranga councillors pressed senior city council staff over a review that found the Mount Maunganui landslide tragedy was preventable.

The councillors formally accepted the findings and recommendations of an external review led by former High Court Judge Paul Davison. The meeting focused on the council’s actions before the landslide and its approach to managing risk.

Chief executive Marty Grenfell said the review’s findings were clear and that the organisation accepted them “without qualification.” The council also faced questions over the signing of a contract for a staff member who did not have proper training.
