Mountaineer Nirmal Purja and 9 others killed in Pakistan avalanche

The mountaineering community is mourning the loss of renowned climber Nirmal Purja and nine members of his international expedition, all of whom perished in a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak in northern Pakistan earlier this week.

The Alpine Club of Pakistan announced that rescue teams had recovered Purja's body, along with those of three other climbers, at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters. The recovery operation, however, was hampered by severe weather conditions.

The avalanche struck on July 30, immediately severing communication with the 10-member expedition led by the 43-year-old British-Nepali climber. Purja's expedition company confirmed on August 1 that none of the team members had survived the disaster.

Authorities reported that the remains of three climbers, an Omani woman, a Nepali man, and an American woman, were recovered and transported to the city of Skardu on July 31. A Chinese national and several other Nepali citizens were also part of the ill-fated expedition.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the mountaineering world, particularly in Nepal, with tributes and condolences pouring in from leaders, including Britain's Prince William, to the families of the deceased climbers.
