Mourners Farewell Sydney Crime Figure Lorenzo Lemalu Amid Heightened Gangland Tensions

Mourners gathered at Sydney's Lakemba Mosque on Sunday to farewell Lorenzo Lemalu, a figure identified by police as the head of the "Coconut Cartel." The funeral proceeded under a heavy police presence, just 24 hours after shots were fired into a different venue, Diamond Venues in Punchbowl, which had been mistakenly advertised as the location for Lemalu's funeral.

Lemalu, who died in a shooting in Ho Chi Minh City on May 21, was allegedly involved in a conflict with the Alameddine crime family. Two Samoan men have reportedly confessed to the killing on Vietnamese television. Police sources indicate that Lemalu's death has heightened gangland tensions in Sydney, and authorities are preparing for possible retaliatory attacks.

The "Coconut Cartel" name is reportedly derived from a historical slur against Pasifika people. Lemalu's remains were returned to his family this week, leading to the funeral service held at the mosque. Many attendees at the service were seen concealing their faces from the media as they entered and exited the mosque, where numerous police vehicles were present.
