Možemo corrects HDZ's grammar on EU anniversary post, claims censorship

A linguistic spat erupted on Facebook between Croatia's ruling HDZ party and the opposition Možemo party over a post commemorating the 13th anniversary of Croatia's European Union membership.

The HDZ Trnje branch posted, "Da današnji dan prije 13 godina, Lijepa naša postala je članica jedne velike obitelji, Europske Unije." Možemo responded with corrections, stating "Na današnji dan" should be used instead of "Da današnji dan," and that "Unija" should be written with a lowercase 'u'. They further clarified that "Lijepa Naša" should be capitalized as it refers to the country, not just the national anthem.

According to Možemo, after their corrections, HDZ Trnje deleted their comments and blocked them from the page. Marta Kiš, a city representative for Možemo, sarcastically commented on Možemo's own post, suggesting HDZ had deleted the comments and was misleading the public. "I looked and there are no comments from you! I suspect HDZ deleted them, you are misleading the public again," she wrote.

One commenter on the Možemo post criticized the party, saying, "While they fought for the homeland and their pockets, you were learning Croatian in school, now you are mocking them, if there were no HDZ, you wouldn't be in the EU but would be like poor Switzerland."
