Mr. Skelly, the charming skeleton, teaches us to appreciate every moment

A simple skeleton drawn on paper became the central character of Christian Watson’s bestselling book How Happy I Am, now available in Croatian bookstores from Stilus in a translation by Lada Furlan Zaborac.

The 128-page book is neither a conventional novel nor a picture book. Each page pairs lavish illustrations with a short, thoughtful message inviting readers to pause, breathe and look at the world, and themselves, with greater gentleness.

Mr. Skelly emerged by chance. Watson, an American designer and founder of the 1924us studio, moved with his wife and two children to remote Tasmania in search of a quieter, slower life. While sketching one day, he drew a simple skeleton. He posted the first short animation, showing Skelly lying on the floor beside the words “life is too short not to be at peace,” and the video went viral.

Watson says the skeleton works as a universal symbol because it strips away visual identity and reminds people that, in the end, everyone is made of the same bones. Through Skelly, he seeks to change the way people view death, moving it away from fear and presenting it as part of life.

Despite his ghostly appearance, Skelly is neither dark nor morbid. He speaks gently and without sentimentality about grief and regret, as well as hope, love and comfort. The character encourages readers to accept what they cannot change, value what they have and find beauty in each new day.
