Mudslide in eastern China kills one, more heavy rain expected

A mudslide in eastern China's Zhejiang Province on Friday claimed one life and left three people missing, according to state media reports. The disaster struck Changxing County around 6:30 a.m. local time, causing a house to collapse. Preliminary investigations suggest the mudslide was a result of a flash flood following intense, sudden rainfall.

Rescue efforts are underway in the affected area. This incident highlights China's increasing vulnerability to destructive weather patterns, which scientists attribute to climate change, exacerbated by an emerging El Nino phenomenon. This year has seen a surge in extreme weather events, including frequent and intense typhoons.

July alone saw natural disasters, including typhoons Maysak, Bavi, and Noul, result in 318 deaths or disappearances and cause approximately $8.5 billion in economic losses. These figures represent an increase from the previous year. More recently, Typhoon Dolphin made landfall, bringing extreme rain across eastern, central, and northern regions, breaking rainfall records at several weather stations.

Authorities are now organizing evacuations in Henan Province following a riverbank breach. Forecasters anticipate continued heavy rainfall across eastern and southeastern China through Sunday, with a major flood expected in Lake Tai, China's third-largest freshwater lake. The persistent extreme weather underscores the growing challenges posed by climate change.
