Muftiate launches book-reading contest for prisoners

A book-reading contest at Kyrgyzstan’s Facility No. 10 will offer winners refrigerators, washing machines and a gas stove, with the prizes handed to their families.

The Muftiate organized the contest with the State Penitentiary Service to encourage prisoners to read, enrich their spiritual lives and spend their free time usefully. Organizers explained the rules and distributed 200 books to participants.

The event also included a lecture on Islamic values and the role of reading in broadening horizons, developing moral qualities and preparing prisoners to return to society. The contest’s total prize fund is 200,000 soms, with additional incentive prizes also planned.

The Muftiate said transferring the main prizes to relatives should both motivate prisoners to take part and provide support to their families.

The distinctive feature of the contest is that the valuable prizes for the winners will be given to their families and relatives. This should not only motivate prisoners to participate in the contest, but also support their relatives.
