Multiple deaths reported after building fire in Brussels

A fire in Brussels, Belgium, has resulted in multiple fatalities, with victims discovered trapped inside an elevator. Emergency services responded to the blaze early in the morning at the 'Oxy' building, located near Place de Brouckère.

According to a fire department spokesperson, the fire originated on the second floor and subsequently spread into the elevator shaft. Firefighters were initially unable to access a second elevator, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional deceased individuals being found there. The victims were discovered only after the fire had been extinguished.

The 'Oxy' building is currently undergoing extensive renovation. The project aims to transform the former administrative structure into a multifunctional complex that will include offices, restaurants, hotel rooms, and residential apartments. The installation of new elevators was part of this ongoing renovation process.

The cause of the fire and the exact circumstances leading to the deaths are under investigation. The prosecutor's office is involved in the inquiry into the tragic incident.
