Municipalities in Hesse Ban Night-Time Robotic Mowing to Protect Hedgehogs

In response to declining hedgehog populations, several municipalities in the German state of Hesse are implementing bans on the night-time operation of robotic lawnmowers. Hedgehogs are listed on the preliminary endangered list for mammals in Hesse, and their numbers are steadily decreasing. The new regulations aim to protect these nocturnal animals, as well as other small vertebrates, from potentially fatal injuries inflicted by the fast-rotating blades of automated mowers.

With the general decree, we want to send a clear signal above all: The protection of hedgehogs and other native wild animals is important to us as a city.

Hanau, for instance, has recently enacted a regulation prohibiting the use of these devices from half an hour before sunset until half an hour after sunrise. Hanau's mayor, Claus Kaminsky, stated that the ordinance sends a clear message about the city's commitment to protecting hedgehogs and other local wild animals. While the city primarily relies on public cooperation and the new legal framework, it will investigate systematic violations of the ban.

Marburg has had a similar night-driving ban for robotic mowers in place since late 2025. The city reports that while precise statistics are unavailable, there has been a noticeable decrease in reports of injured or killed hedgehogs since the ban's implementation. Marburg emphasizes prevention and education, noting that many residents are unaware of the danger their mowers pose to wildlife. The city believes the ban significantly contributes to preserving hedgehog populations, which are increasingly reliant on urban green spaces like parks and gardens due to habitat loss in agricultural areas.

The district of Gießen was the first in Hesse to issue such a decree on May 1st. Carmen Schmidt from the Gießen district highlighted the lack of awareness among many robotic mower users, stating that people often trust manufacturer claims about sensors without realizing the risks. The restrictions underscore a growing effort by local authorities to create safer environments for wildlife within urban and suburban areas.
