Museums: New building for Lutherhaus - new permanent exhibition opens in 2027

Wittenberg's historic Lutherhaus is set to undergo a significant transformation with the construction of a modern new entrance building and a permanent exhibition. The project, costing 15.6 million euros, aims to ensure the UNESCO World Heritage site continues to tell its stories for future generations while preserving its unique aura.

Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer emphasized the goal of allowing the "walls to tell their stories" and maintaining the site's World Heritage status. The new building's design will echo the former director's house that once stood on the site. This expansion is expected to substantially improve the museum's spatial capacity, according to Thomas Müller, board member of the Luther Memorials Foundation in Saxony-Anhalt.

With the renovation and expansion of the Lutherhaus, we want to let these walls tell their stories in the future. We want to preserve their aura as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The foundation is committed to preserving the museum's authenticity while integrating modern standards for energy efficiency, accessibility, and safety. A time capsule containing documents, blueprints, and a coin from the current year was sealed during the foundation stone ceremony. The new permanent exhibition is slated to open in autumn 2027, with a special exhibition, "Literally Luther: Facets of a Reformer," currently on display in the adjacent Augusteum. The Lutherhaus is recognized as the world's largest museum dedicated to the Reformation.
