Museums Plan Exclusive Fossil Hunts After Danish Cliffs Gain World Heritage Status

Following the designation of the two moler cliffs, Hanklit and Knudeklinten, in the western Limfjord as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Museum Salling is preparing to offer enhanced experiences for visitors to the island of Fur.

Per Lunde Lauridsen, museum director for Museum Salling, announced plans for more exclusive fossil hunting tours. These tours will provide a more in-depth, professional guided experience, specifically targeting tourists with a keen interest in the geological and paleontological significance of the area. Additionally, the museum is exploring the possibility of offering tours by boat, allowing visitors to view the cliffs from the water.

We will, among other things, look at creating more exclusive fossil hunts where you can get a more thorough professional guided tour along the cliff.

This initiative is supported by increased funding for both Fur Museum and the Fossil- and Moler Museum in Nykøbing Mors. As part of the World Heritage application, Morsø and Skive Municipalities agreed to allocate additional funds. Starting in 2027, both museums will receive an extra 850,000 Danish kroner annually. This increased budget will be used to improve the overall tourist experience, including hiring an additional geologist for Fur Museum, according to Lauridsen.
