N Macedonia reports 8th West Nile virus death

North Macedonia confirmed its eighth death from West Nile virus on Sunday as the mosquito-borne infection continued to spread across several European countries.

The country has recorded 58 cases and eight deaths. All of those who died were men between 62 and 83 years old and had underlying health conditions.

The European Union’s health agency said earlier this month that 15 European countries had reported more than 1,000 cases this year. West Nile virus can cause flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, tremors, fever, coma and encephalitis, a potentially fatal swelling of brain tissue. It can also cause meningitis.
