N1bn disability fund: LASODA denies corruption, launches probe

The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) has refuted allegations of corruption surrounding the administration of its N1 billion Disability Intervention Fund. The agency stated that it has initiated an internal investigation into an anonymous claim of kickbacks, emphasizing that no formal complaint was lodged before the allegations surfaced publicly.

LASODA released a statement asserting that reports alleging officials demanded kickbacks misrepresented the situation. The agency reaffirmed its dedication to transparency, accountability, and the welfare of persons with disabilities. While acknowledging the receipt of an anonymous WhatsApp message concerning the issue, LASODA noted that no formal complaint or documented allegation had been submitted to the office as of June 9, 2026. A fact-finding exercise was immediately launched following the anonymous message.

The preliminary investigation identified a suspected officer, and the matter has been escalated to the appropriate superior authority in accordance with Lagos State Public Service disciplinary procedures. LASODA stressed that no disciplinary proceedings have concluded, and any action would be determined by the Lagos State Civil Service Commission. The agency also dismissed claims that disability organizations were blacklisted for refusing to pay kickbacks, explaining that annual support depends on various factors including program priorities and available resources.

Furthermore, LASODA clarified that comments attributed to Dr. Adebukola Adebayo were made during his previous tenure as Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Lagos State chapter, and he no longer holds that position. The agency plans to enhance transparency through improved stakeholder engagement, reporting channels, and digitization of its processes.
