Nachtigal Dam Project Partners with UNICEF to Boost Youth Development in Riverside Communities

Beyond its primary function of electricity generation, the Nachtigal hydroelectric project is now focusing on human development through a new partnership. UNICEF Cameroon and the Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC) have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at enhancing the living conditions of children and young people in five communes adjacent to the dam. The agreement, signed on June 30, 2026, by UNICEF Cameroon Representative Nadine Perrault and NHPC General Manager Claire Gall, marks a significant step in supporting the local populations.

The collaboration will focus on strengthening efforts for child and youth welfare in the communes of Batchenga, Sa’a, Obala, Mbandjock, and Ntui. Key objectives include supporting these communities in their adoption of the 'Children Friendly Communes' network, a global initiative promoting child rights and well-being. Additionally, the partnership will channel resources into targeted investments in education, child protection services, and fostering greater civic engagement among young people.
