NAFDAC begins nationwide mop-up of banned sachet, PET bottle alcohol

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has initiated a nationwide enforcement drive to confiscate alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles smaller than 200 milliliters. This action directly implements the Federal Government's ban on such packaging, which aims to safeguard public health.

NAFDAC enforcement teams are actively conducting operations across all six geopolitical zones. They are targeting markets, motor parks, retail outlets, and bars to identify and remove the prohibited products. The agency has also ordered the closure of manufacturing facilities that failed to comply with the ban.

Manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, and retailers are urged to immediately surrender any remaining stock of the banned items. NAFDAC stressed that continued possession or sale of these products constitutes a legal violation, potentially leading to product seizure, regulatory sanctions, and prosecution. The agency highlighted that the enforcement aims to reduce underage drinking, harmful alcohol consumption, and substance abuse, particularly among young people.
