NAFDAC uncovers illegal sachet alcohol production despite ban — DG

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has discovered the ongoing illegal production of alcoholic drinks in sachets and PET bottles below 200 milliliters, despite a nationwide ban. Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye stated that enforcement teams found factories actively producing these prohibited products, contrary to the Federal Government's directive.

During coordinated raids across Lagos, Ogun, and other states, NAFDAC officers uncovered evidence of continued manufacturing, including packaging materials dated as recently as July 23, 2026. Adeyeye emphasized that this indicates deliberate defiance, not old stock being cleared. Some manufacturers have reportedly relocated their production machines to unregistered premises and removed company signboards to evade detection.

Packaging materials dated July 23, 2026, were evacuated. That was four days ago. These manufacturers were producing banned products this very month, just last week, even after the ban had taken full effect and after NAFDAC had already engaged them. This is not a misunderstanding. This is deliberate, calculated defiance of federal regulation.

Adeyeye also revealed that NAFDAC enforcement officers faced attacks while carrying out their duties. One officer was nearly stabbed, and another was physically assaulted. Adeyeye condemned these attacks as criminal acts, asserting that those responsible would be prosecuted, stating, "An attack on a NAFDAC officer carrying out a lawful regulatory duty is an attack on the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

NAFDAC is committed to enforcing the ban through continued mop-up operations until all prohibited alcoholic drinks are removed from circulation. The agency warned that factories found in violation would be shut down, and distributors and retailers would face consequences. The DG reaffirmed the agency's dedication to upholding the ban and protecting public health.
